WWV History

The history of WWV and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS, or Bureau), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), began almost the same time as Marconi's famous trans-Atlantic broadcast of the letter "S" in 1901.

For up-to-date information on WWV and WWVB, please follow these links to the official NIST web pages.

An excellent history of the station was written by Glenn Nelson, WWV Electronics Technician and Historian, for the 100th Anniversary of the station in 2019.  Please follow this link to "A Century of WWV."
