WWV History

The history of WWV and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS, or Bureau), now the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), began almost the same time as Marconi's famous trans-Atlantic broadcast of the letter "S" in 1901.

On these pages we'll link you to the fascinating stories of early radio, of WWV and its evolution from novelty music broadcasting to becoming the frequency and time standard for the western hemisphere, and to NIST current research and station happenings.

Our goal is to open membership to WWV ARC in the Fall 2021.  Stay tuned!
